Wyoming Wilderness

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming We met a great couple this time last year, Linda & Alex who invited us to stay with them in Wilson Wyoming, which is about 12 miles out of Jackson Hole. There are lots of ranches out here and you feel like you are driving through Horse Whisperer* country with rolling green hills all around you. We had to take the long way around to their house, as the short cut had a locked gate at the end of it that didn’t open for a few more days. Turning into their driveway wasn’t easy as it’s not meant for a 35’ trailer! cut the corner and the trailer would end up in the ditch; after a few attempts I managed to get into their property. Not having done any walks for a while they took us on a hike up the hill opposite their valley. 7,000ft can really get your heart pumping. It was a great walk through the aspens, and at the top we were rewarded with fantastic views of the valley. And, we didn’t run into any bears on the way! With the annual elk antler c...

Snow and bears

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming Tom Tom took us through Idaho which looked longer but a quicker route than the one we took last year, but was the same as the one we took the year before. There were a few times when she got lost and told us we were going in the wrong direction, but we recognized some of the landmarks so knew she was wrong and kept going. We got into Gros Ventre campground (pronounced gro-vont) in the late afternoon and the lady couldn’t believe that we wanted to stay a week. I had to confirm that Lindsay was indeed serious. Most people it seems only stay a night or two. We have been there three times before and love it. Unbeknown to us, the campground had only been open a day! What luck we didn’t arrive earlier. There was only one loop open, right at the end – why wouldn’t they just open the one closest to the entrance? The following day we went in search of bears. Lindsay had heard from a guy whose Facebook page he follows that there had been sightings up...

Now our journey could begin. Next stop Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming. One of our favourite campgrounds is Gros Ventre in the Grand Tetons and it hardly ever fills up, so we knew there would be a vacancy and there was. We went looking for the moose again, but didn’t find her or her new baby. This time we were treated to warm days with blue skies, birds singing in the trees and cold nights. Our large picture window at the back of the trailer gave us a wonderful view of trees and shrubs. Backing for the first time into our campsite was a bit challenging. Lindsay is an excellent trailer backer in a right hand drive vehicle, but it will take some practice to be as good sitting on the opposite side of the car. You can use a generator in this park so we were able to test ours but found that it didn’t power anything inside. Had they installed a converter? He wasn’t looking forward to driving 11 hours there and back or the fuel bill. Luckily we had mobile and internet ...

The Grand Teton National Park, WY

We had read the weather report for both Salt Lake City and Jackson (the nearest town to the Grand Tetons) and both had said that thunderstorms were on the agenda for the next few days. We found a little state park campground on the way up and it snowed while we tried to cook dinner! The little van is really only a fair weather vehicle, it is not pleasant when it's raining or snowing as the space inside is very limited and you pretty much have to go to bed. We arrived on the second day and found a camp spot in Gros Ventre campground which is just outside the Grand Teton National Park, but run by the park. It is close enough to Jackson for us to go in and get dinner. You can’t cook if it’s raining! Unfortunately Lindsay had already started cooking on the first night before we realized it would rain and he got wet. snow! Bison in our campground The next morning we woke up to snow! We spent the next couple of days in the same campground and went into Jackson du...
