Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona The drive to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument was about 3½ hours south east of Yuma. We went through two border inspections but they didn’t stop us. There were about 8 police cars sitting in the middle of the highway within a short distance, nearly as many as we have ever seen in our entire time here – it must be a crossing point for illegals. The park is only about 7 miles to the Mexican border and they do have problems with drug cartels here. I guess we didn’t have the skin colour they were looking for as they weren’t interested in us. I did see a Mexican walking in the middle of nowhere…not sure how far he will get. I was surprised there were no signs along the road warning you not to pick up hitchhikers like the ones we see near prisons. Twin Peaks Campground , Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, AZ Highway 85 Why we chose here? To visit the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument park Location: 4 miles south of Why, AZ on highway 85. Close to the Mexican border. Sites: 34 Tent sites, 46 RV no generator sites, 128 RV generator sites (25 x 36-40’) Facilities: Restrooms with solar showers, Dump site with fresh water. All RV sites have concrete pads and are pull throughs, gardens in between sites and a water tap close to each site. The campground is well laid out and really nice. Groceries: Shop before you come. Reservations: No, first come first serve. As you enter the campground, a ranger at the booth will check your NP pass and allocate you a site and take your money.
